Old Stuff Day: Chumby's Definitive Daemon Discourse Extended Edition

Howdy folks, long time no post.  Still busy with life so no new posts quite yet, but since everybody's riding the old nostalgia express, I figured I'd get in on it too.  Here's one of my favorite articles for you to enjoy again, fully remastered with digital audio and some totally non-intrusive and relevant extended scenes certainly not added in just because I wanted more CGI shit cluttering up the action.

Chumby's Definitive Daemon Discourse: Army Lists

Ok, so now I'll be putting up various army lists.  These aren't going to be the Best Of or all powerful, they're just examples of the different ways you can set up your army, be they fluff, playstyle or theme, or just fun and gimmicky stuff.  Not everything will be totally competitive, but I hope they'll all be interesting even if only as amusingly bad.  It's more a thought exercise than anything definitive (oops, gotta change the title).

I'll also be taking requests if anybody has 'em.  Most default to 2000 just because that's my preferred points level, but I'll be happy to do make one for any points value you can think of  (this may come back to haunt me, but I can take it I hope).

They'll all be linked form here when it's done and labeled by theme, god, viability, or whatever else.

Chumby's Definitive Daemon Discourse: Wave Splits and Deployment

Now that the unit reviews are up, I'm just gonna post a couple thoughts that may not be totally obvious or covered elsewhere.  This one's a lot less structured, more of a free flow of ideas, so if I miss anything feel free to yell at me for it ;)

Deployment is a big one, and oddly enough it doesn't get much mention.  How to split up your waves, where to put them, and, most importantly, what to do when you don't get your preferred one, are as crucial to a Daemons as deployment is to any other army out there.  There really is no hard and fast answer as every army is different and need to do different things.  Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind though:

Chumby's Definitive Daemon Discourse: Heavy Support

Home stretch, y'all, keep pushing!

Heavy Support has, oddly enough, your Heaviest Support units.  These are the big guns, the toughest nuts to crack, the killiest sumbitches you can field.  Everybody loves their Heavy Support slots.  And, often enough, they fill up quick.  You need Heavies typically to do the job that nothing else in your army can do.  They don't make an army all on their own, but making the right selection of Heavies is of great importance.  While Elites are flexible and Fast Attack are zippy, Heavy Support are the hammer that can smash your opponent asunder.

Chumby's Definitive Daemon Discourse: Fast Attack

Not a single dime from you jerks.  Well fine, I'll post it today.

It's an Attack!  That's Fast!  Who knew?

Fast Attack is just that, the speedy stuff in the Codex.  Typically, Fast Attack choices fill more supporting roles as mobile, hard-hitting and fragile units.  They may not be the strongest, toughest, or most points efficient, but they are still important for closing with the enemy quickly and delivering a good punch, creating an opening for your bigger and nastier units to push through.  Sending Fast Attack off unsupported is usually going to be a suicide run, so they work best in tandem with ranged support, tough beaters, scoring units, and the like.

Chumby's Definitive Daemon Discourse: Troops

2 down, 3 to go.  Today we're talking about Troops.  Daemon Troops.

Troops are obviously essential in 5th ed, but not always important to a good army.  You need them to hold objectives and not die.  That's about it.  The sad truth is, Troops tend to be underpowered compared to units in other slots and, as a result, you'll often end up trying to figure out how to minimize the cost of your necessary scoring burdens while maximizing their survivability.  There are exceptions, of course, Troops that are durable and/or very killy.  Just remember that in 2 out of 3 missions your Troops need to live, anything else they do is gravy.  Even in Annihilation their main job is staying alive.

Chumby's Definitive Daemon Discourse: Elites

After that monster of an entry for HQs, Elites should be fairly straightforward, yes?

In most armies, the Elites section is where you'll find the heavy hitters, the go to units, the MVPs of the Codices.  Stuff like Terminators, Fire Dragons, Lootas, and Hive Guard.  These are the units that give your army teeth.  Also you'll find Legion of the Damned, Mandrakes, Ogryns, and Stealth Suits.  Utter shit.  For better or worse, your Elites choices can make or break you.

Chumby's Definitive Daemon Discourse: HQs

In my previous article (that so many people read :P) I put out a general summary of how the Daemon army operates.  Now I'll be going through each section of the FOC in more detail before putting up some sample armies.  Won't that be fun?  First up is HQs.

Daemons are really spoiled for choice with HQs.  They have 15 separate choices in this slot alone, that's half the available choices in the entire army list.  Daemons can also have up to 4 of them.  Heralds, named or otherwise, can be taken 2 per HQ slot.  It opens up a lot more options for fielding up to 4 out of those 15 picks. As a result, the HQ slot is easily the most hotly contested and has the most variety within.  Like any army, your HQ picks influence the rest of your army, and with so much variety here you can make big changes just by swapping HQs.

Chumby's Definitive Daemon Discourse....IN SPAAAACE!

Daemons.  They're a weird bunch.  If CSM was the victim of the late 4th dumb down design paradigm, Daemons were the gooey fun bits left over, stapled together, prettied up and sent out into the world, which I guess means they're the benficiary?  Anyway, we're left with a new Codex, first of its kind, with a unique style of play.  Daemons are also in effect in WHFB, but that's another tale.

Fallout 3 DLC

My little brother just went on his school trip to Washington D.C., so I was inspired to play Fallout 3 again. Lucky me, Deal of the Week on Xbox Live is all Fallout DLC half off. I already paid full price for the first 4 (shut up, I hate you) so I picked up Mothership Zeta for 5 bucks. If you're gonna pick up DLC, this is a good time to do so.

I <3 Fallout, so more of it is always a good idea. Here's my experience with the DLC if anybody is on the fence.
