Tourney Wolves

Hey folks.

I've resolved to try and get to as many events as possible locally to get some ideas of how to run one of my own.  You know, my own tournament, with Blackjack & Hookers.  Got an event coming up this Saturday, a 2000 point tournament with no soft scores!  Yay!  Problem is, it's using the Battle Missions, so that might cause some problems.

Anyway, here's my list:
HQ
Logan Grimnar
Wolf Lord w/ Wolf Claw, Storm Shield, Thunderwolf Mount, Saga of the Warrior Born, 2 Fenrisian Wolves
Rune Priest w/ Living Lightning, Tempest's Wrath, Chooser of the Slain, Saga of the Beastslayer

Elites
Lone Wolf w/ terminator armor, chainfist, storm shield

Troops
10 Wolf Guard, 2 WGT w/ cyclones, 2 w/ combi-meltas
3x 5 Wolf Guard, 1 WGT w/ cyclone and chainfist, 1 w/ combi-melta

Fast Attack
3x 3 TWC, 1 powerfist, 1 bolter/ccw, 1 bolt pistol/ccw   (wound allocation funsies)

Total - 2000

So, 10 mobile missiles, 10 cav models, and nothing need to be static.  A lot of the Battle Missions really punish Troop-light static battleforcey armies, so I went as from it as possible.

Thoughts?

UPDATE:  After some testing, I stuck in those combi-meltas.  They proved to be invaluable considering how cheap they are.

Gettin' ready for the Open, eh?

j/k ... I think it's a solid list -- Twolves are pretty fragile; hope none of the guard players there have "come on" to the value of demos!

Forgive me, since I'm a bit unfamiliar with all the Wolf builds, but is this Wolf Wing, or are some of those WG in Power Armor and some in Terminator Armor?

Overall, I love this kind of list - elite, hard-hitting, punishing... the only thing you'd have to be concerned with is being out-maneuvered, but that's what the Thunderwolves are there for, yes?

I look forward to hearing about this event. Any chance you'll take pics?

I may well bring something like this to the Open, so look out. Of course, I'll have to do as much PT as possible to get up and running by then.

Demos could cause problems, but I've got 2 doggies to suck up wounds and it'll be easy to get cover with just 3 models per unit. With big bases and spread out-ness, it'll be hard to catch more than 2 models unless I get tank shocked or caught with my pants down after slapping some guardsmen silly. That's why I brought 3 units ;)

Brent, it's a Loganwing/TWC mix thing, I don't think there's a term for it. Yes, the majority of the WG are in power armor to protect the WGTs doing the real damage.

My infantry are slow, but each unit has a 54" reach and with Logan I can make the big unit Tank Hunters to go after tougher targets, or I can give them Fearless should I need it. And yes, TWC are there to bring the pain up close and personal with their potential 24" charge range.

I'll definitely post pics, so no worries there. Hopefully I won't lose a bunch of games, like a certain zombYe and crazy person I know ;)

It's different :P. I don't know the Battle Missions so blabla there but I'm thinking 3x5 TWC might better *strokes chin* but that would nee an entire list re-work.

Otherwise maybe slap on some combis on the WG for the big finger to tank shocks or flaming objectives, etc. I'd drop the LW for that as he'll essentially be running in between your WG and TWC and shouldn't be too hard to take down for most opponents solo.

LoganWolf, I dub it.

Good call on the combis, Kirbs. That should hopefully give tank shockers pause. I can lose Terminator armor on the RP or a couple melta bombs.

I would go full st. john and take 20 TWC, but I like the added flexibility of having Troops that are worth a damn :P GH in Razorbacks would be doable, but I don't know if I can get those ready in a week.

LoganWolf, I like it. It's got a ring to it.

I just plain cringe at the battle missions.

Depending on how things go, it's all too easy to get totally boned in one of those.

That lone Lone Wolf feels a little lonely. No friends? Any way you could use the points, or does he sit back with the troops and contemplate smacking things silly.

Past that, I'm with Kirby; freeing up a few points would go a ways towards giving you combis for that extra punch when needed.

I'm curious how it turns out. Pictures and batreps, plz k thx?

Lone Wolf kinda runs around either protecting the WG or just drawing fire. I <3 anti-KPs, you can just throw a LW in and be ok.

It's for sure interesting! I think Wolves are one of the few armies these days that can pull off a non-mech army and still be competitive. Lots of assaulty power everywhere, you'll win against a lot of dedicated combat armies. I especially like the 'mobile missiles' everywhere. Hard to deal with unless you kill the whole squad off, and it's nice that every squad has some sort of tranport-popping ability.

I guess I should ask though- do you have a plan against a dual-raider list? I don't see any melta guns, and though the wolves have S10 fists and melta bombs, it's not TOO reliable against something that's moved 12" the turn before. Flamestorm cannons will hurt your squad that are out in the open as much as the termies inside will.

Anyways, not a lot of problems with this list, as I see it. Just figured I'd throw that in there, since that's something I'd personally be 'worried' about. More melta is what I'd advocate, like Kirby said. You can fit as many combi-meltas on the wolf guard as you want, for cheap.

X, thanks for posting. Dual Raider could cause me some problems, but I've got tank hunters on the big squad, so 4 S9 shots and D6 S8 shots when I need them could be useful. Beyond that, I'll just use leet strats. A dual Raider list isn't going to have much else, so I can kill off the support and mob the rocks with TWC or tons of shots when they show up.

Kirbs, you are spot on on the melta, I'm posting a bat rep you might like.

That's the understatement of the week.

I was at a doubles tourney a couple months ago where they used battle missions, lets just say that playing against a combined Ork/Nid horde is slightly less fun with a combined mech saturation marine army when the scenario includes all infantry getting sustained attack...

Lets not even get into the 3rd game, against another Ork/Nid combo, and we drew the scenario where a WAAAHG through successive turns...and they had Ghazkgull....that was fun....

Ugh, doubles and crapple missions? That's just wrong.
